I have turned into a really lazy mo-fo. At one point in my life I did nothing better than web design. Every page I made was obscenly packed with little annimations and scripted tricks. Now I don't give a damn what anything looks like. If it functions, that's fine with me. Each entry has three texts; the first is a description, the second is the directons from Tech's North Avenue, and the third are my recommendations. And now, without further ado... my guide:

(A quick note on Atlanta driving. With a few exceptions, most of the interesting places in Atlanta are either on or near Peachtree or Ponce/North Avenue. Peachtree generally runs North and South while Ponce De Leon and North Avenue run parallel to each other only a block apart for quite a bit of their existence. Peachtree crosses Ponce & North only a few blocks away from Tech. North runs right by Tech.)
Decatur:
Smalltownish. Nice place. Home of Agnes Scott and a lot of local musicians.
Take North Avenue to Peachtree Street. Make a left into the right lane. You’ll turn almost immediately onto Ponce De Leon. Drive down Ponce for a long time. It’ll split twice. Watch the road signs. You’ll notice that Ponce veers to the left at the first split and to the left (which is really straight) at the second one. Eventually you’ll find yourself in a downtown area of some place. Make a right onto Church Street. The Java Monkey will be on your left and MARTA on your right.
Java Monkey, Eddie’s Attic, Raging Burrito, Agnes Scott
Little Five Points:
The hippie part of town. What more is there to say?
Take North Avenue over quite a few hills and past a few lights until you get to Moreland Avenue (first big one after North Highland). Make a right. Stay in the right lane and watch your right. Eventually you’ll see some really strange stores. Find parking. This is little five.
teaspace, The Vortex, Olive Bistro, Seven-stages Theater, Variety Playhouse
Virginia Highlands:
Where well-to-do 23-35 year old people go to eat and drink. And shop. At very expensive places.
Take North Avenue down to North Highland (one before Moreland Avenue). Make a left. You’ll go through a few lights and, after passing a grocery store with a huge mural on your left, you’ll start seeing a strip of stores on your right and left. You don’t necessarily have to stop here. There’s at least three strips to Virginia Highlands on North Highland, each separated by a mile or so of residential property (houses).
Dark Horse Tavern, Doc Chey’s, Ben & Jerry’s, a few Gelato places, the Majestic is almost in the area
East Atlanta:
Perhaps one of the hippest parts of town. It’s a neighborhood and so it has restaurants and stuff but the area is mostly known for its bars.
Take Moreland (see Little Five Points) to Little Five. But don’t stop there. Stay on Moreland until you’re passing the interstate on-ramp. After you pass over I-20, watch your left for a sign that says East Atlanta. Make a left and then make a right.
Sacred Grounds, The Fountainhead, The Echo Lounge
Buckhead:
Do I really need to say anything?
Take North Avenue to Peachtree Street. Make a left. Go a long way. Eventually you’ll be there.
The Majestic:
The all night hangout. Open 24 hours. In my opinion one of the most entertaining places in town. Gets a little smoky at times but who cares compared to the environment.
Stay on North till ya hit Peachtree St. Make a left and stay in the right lane, it’ll be a turn only lane and should take you onto Ponce De Leon. The Majestic is on your right on this street. You’ll pass the Spaghetti Factory & the Krispie Kream doughnut shop. You’ll go over a few more hills and go another mile or two after them. Eventually the Majestic will be on your right. It’s in a plaza with an Indie-movie theater.
My usuals here are: Two scrambled eggs w/ cheese, raison toast, grits, ham; grilled chicken melt (not on menu); and apple pie with ice cream.
teaspace:
This place is pretty cool but closes way too early (for CS majors, it’s actually open pretty late most nights). Also pretty new. If you’re a fan of green tea, black tea, chai tea, bubble tea, any sort of tea… go here. You’ll love it. When it starts being better known it’ll be an excellent place to meet people cause of forced proximity to the people next to ya.
The catch is that it’s pretty damned hard to find. Go to little five points and walk over to the main strip (Euclid Ave). Find the bookstore. See the alley to the left of it? Walk down it. Yes, walk down it. teaspace will be on your right close to the end.
Get whatever you feel in the mood for here. The Oolong bubble tea is supposed to be one of the best drinks though. I don’t know how I feel about it, but it’s at least refreshing. Word of warning: You can get cheap refills on almost any of the regular teas but not the chai.
Java Monkey:
Kinda Yuppie but stays open till midnight even on Sundays, has an excellent environment to read or study, makes a good Mocha, can be easily reached on Marta, and is completely different from any sort of place around Tech. (But then again so is almost any place on this list.) Note: this is the main coffee shop for an all-girls college town. Warning: this is the main coffee shop…. (You’ll see what I mean.)
Driving:
R. Thomas’:
Definitely in the running for the best veggie/vegan food in town. And it’s open till 6 A.M. during the week, 24 hours on the weekend.
Across the street from Intermezzo and next door to the beignet place. These will be the directions for all three places: Head north on Peachtree St. (the Fox will be on your left). After a little over 4 or 5 miles and a ton of curves, you’ll see three restaurants in a row on your left ending with a Wendy’s and a bar and art gallery on your right. Look for parking either behind Intermezzo (on the right side of the street) or behind R. Thomas. This place would be a big hassle to get to by walking. But you would have stuff to do all night if you did. And there’s always the Marta bus option till 1….
Chips & Salsa are great. So is the R’s Quesadillas. Both combined can feed two people. And they are far cheaper than anything else on the otherwise expensive menu.
Intermezzo:
If you’re reading this list, I’ve sent it to you; if I’ve sent this list to you, you’ve been here. Best coffee in town. Best deserts in town. Tad bit pretentious, but in a good way. Perfect for a first date. Also… they’re open till at least 3 A.M. but the kitchen closes early.
See R. Thomas’ for directions. (If yer going on a date and you don’t have a car, get a cab… if the girl’s cool though, take Marta; if she’s a snob… find something closer to Tech.)
I have more recommendations for here than anywhere else by far….
Huey’s:
Go here for beignets, those doughy things with powdered sugar that are popular in New Orleans. Don’t get anything else unless yer really, really in the mood for Cajun. In which case go somewhere else. Note: Don’t wear black… they’re pretty damned messy.
See R. Thomas’ for directions.
I’ve already made my recommendation: beignets.
Eddie’s Attic:
Into local acoustic music? This place is pretty cool for that sort of thing. It can only hold about a hundred people or so but it’s one of the main places where John Mayer, the Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins, etc. got their start. Pretty cheap too. eddiesattic.com
Get to Decatur by car or Marta (see directions to Java Monkey). Orient yourself such that Java Monkey is on your left and the Marta station on your right. Going down that road (Church St), make you first right. Keep your eyes open for an Eddie’s Attic sign on your right pretty soon. There’ll be a pretty big parking lot for it.
People I go there to see are Jennifer Nettles and Matthew Kahler. This is almost certainly the center of Atlanta acoustic/folk music.
Flying Biscuit:
Like Intermezzo, anyone reading this list has probably been here. Best breakfast/brunch in town in my opinion. Nothing more to say. Note: Excellent place for a late breakfast date.
This is kind of complicated. But not terribly so. Make your way to little five points. Notice where the two main roads that have interesting stuff on them (Moreland & Euclid) come together. There’s another road coming in which looks like it runs straight into Euclid (the main strip). It’s called McLendon. Head down that road for a while. You’ll pass some stores which come out of no where at the bottom of the hill. Then you’ll go uphill again and pass a park. Flying Biscuit will be on your right when you finally make it to the next big strip of stores. (The strip starts with a Felinni’s pizza.)
Big fan of the Mexican Wrap. The biscuits are aptly amazing. The OJ is great but get a small (lots of $$). Unless you know what you’re getting into, don’t order anything with “love” in the title. Oh ya, coffee’s good too.
Crescent Moon Café:
Some people say this is the best breakfast in town. I prefer Flying Biscuit… by a lot. But it is nevertheless pretty damn good and in Decatur (which is always a nice break from Tech and easily Marta accessible).
This is off of Ponce if I remember correctly. Orient yourself at Java Monkey. Find Ponce (major road right beside you). Make a left onto Ponce. Walk on Ponce for a while. It will be on your left after the court house and a small record store (in that order). Right beside Ruby Tuesday’s. On Ponce.
Good OJ but treat it like Flying Biscuit OJ—get the small. Good French Toast. Good fried chicken. Decent BBQ.
Maggiano’s:
Not necessarily the best Italian in town but decent. Large portions. Yr supposed to come here with a large group. (6+) But a smaller group isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Dress up. It’s vaguely expensive but it does what it does really well. To give you an idea of what type of place this is, it’s packed more than any other place in town during prom season.
Go north on Peachtree for a while. From Tech. After a long time (and passing through the main strip of Buckhead) it’ll be on your left. If you kept going for another minute or two you would see Lenox Square on your right. Another minute after that you’d see Phipps’ on your left.
Yer on yer own.
Olive Bistro:
Currently my favorite place to grab lunch. Excellent Mediterranean food with a slight twist thanks to the owner. It’s not necessarily cheap, but not much more expensive than anyplace else and can be done for only a little bit of money. I think it’s closed on Monday though. The outside is an excellent place to people-watch when the weather’s half-decent. When the weather’s fine it’s also a good place to read.
Down the Euclid strip of Lil’ Five. It is between two theater’s: Seven-Stages & the Variety Playhouse.
The Lasagna is excellent, but not what you might expect at first. Has a strong tomato-basil sauce with a hint of lemon.
Apres Diem:
If Intermezzo is where the tourists, pretensious club-goers, and struggling actors hang out, this is where the locals, well-dressed yuppies, and struggling models (mostly female) go. Very enjoyable place which does a lot of things well. It’s a bar, restaurant, coffeehouse, and lounge. Continuing the comparison, if Intermezzo is an excellent place for a first date, go here for the third. (You can only sit in the dark just so much.) One of my favorite places in town. Bustles on Friday and Saturday night. Closes @ midnight during the week and two on Friday and Saturday.
Head down Ponce coming from Tech. You’ll pass the Krispie Kream on your right. Search for Monroe Avenue on your left. It’ll be a little while (I think there’s a turning lane for it). Turn into Monroe and travel down it for a bit. You’ll be making a left off of it onto Eighth. But more important than the name of 8th street is the fact that you’ll be seeing a Mellow Mushroom. This is the vaguely tricky part: there’s actually two plazas, one in front and one behind. The one in front has the Mellow Mushroom and Win-Dixie. The one behind has a movie theater in it. Park and find the box office of the movie theater. See the large group of people sitting down on your left? That’s it.
Orangina & Calamari if I’m not planning on eating a lot.
Mellow Mushroom
Good pizza. Unique. Best in it’s category.
See Apres Diem.
You decide the pizza.
Jake’s Ice Cream
The best ice cream in town. Probably the state. Possibly the south-east. It’s pretty good. Also an excellent place to read or watch the sunset. Don’t come here unless you have a car or lots of time.
Take North Avenue away from Tech. Make a right on North Highland (it’s the intersection before the little five road; it has Emanual’s tavern and Video Drome rental). You’ll be on North Highland for a while. After a few hills you’ll see a place called Fritti on your left. That’s not it. Keep going. Another minute or two you’ll see Jake’s on your right. You’ll almost certainly pass it the first time. If you see a bunch of concrete pillars coming out of the ground on your right and a bridge on your left… you’ve gone too far.
Big fan of the Cinnamon Kenya. But get whatever you want… it’s all good.
The Vortex:
Best burgers in town. Cool atmosphere. Great for lunch. They card after eight.
Go to little five and you can’t miss it. Why? The door’s a friggin’ skull.
Once again, you decide. I like the Yokahama or the Cowboy.
Take Ponce into Decatur, take a right onto Church St. It’ll be immediately on your left beside the Bread Company. You can find free parking if you make the first left off of Church St. (between the shops and a church) and then make the first left again onto a one way side-street. I’ve never been ticketed there. But don’t hold me responsible if you do eh?
Taking Marta:
Take the rail to what I think is the end of the line; either way it’s Decatur. There’s two exits from the station. Go out the one that’s NOT to the buses. It’ll be across the street a few shops on your left.
Not coffee but chocolate: Mexican Hot Chocolate.
Coffee, white chocolate: Ciccolocino Bianco.
Coffee, black chocolate: You decide.
Coffee, sweet: Bach.
Coffee, my favorite: Brio
Fizzy drink: Frizzante Spice
Appetizer: Baked Brie or Fruit & Cheese. (Depends on how much you wanna spend.)
Entrée: Tomato-Basil Linguini.
Desert: You decide. I like the Coconut Rum Cheesecake.
Both the Tabbouleh & Pesto salads are excellent (they make for cheap but filling lunches).
And whatever you do, make sure you get Turkish coffee (w/ sugar) & the Baklava for desert.
Penne Albufera if I am.
Moccacino Blanc if you want a coffee drink.
Warning: The hummus does not taste like it normally would.
The pretzels are great.
