WHO ARE WE?

We are a group of Georgia Tech students who are volunteer teachers at Bright Futures Atlanta, a Christian ministry in the inner city. We run an after school program called Sharpening Skills for Success (S3). S3, which we started in fall of 2004, serves 25 inner city middle and high school students.

WHAT IS OUR GOAL?

The ultimate goal of S3 (and Bright Futures in general) is to see our students grow up to be productive members of society. To be effective teachers and mentors, we try to build strong, long-term relationships with the kids.

WHEN DO WE TEACH?

During the school year, we teach S3 TTH 4:30-6:15 pm (you pick one or both days to come). We begin the first week of classes and end the Thursday of dead week. We have one mandatory orientation meeting before we begin teaching.

WHAT DO WE TEACH?

S3 is a Christian based program. Our focus/theme changes every semester:

Fall 2004 Reading and Writing in the Real World
Spring 2005 The Wonderful World of Math
Summer 2005 Speaking in the Real World
Fall 2005 Reading and Writing in the Real World 2: Exploring Geography
Spring 2006Money Matters in the Real World: Personal Finance
Summer 2006 SAT Prep for older kids. Relaxed reading for younger kids.
Fall 2006Functional Families in the Real World
Spring 2007Basic Math Skills

WHERE DO WE TEACH?

We teach at Bright Futures Atlanta (BFATL), which is also the home of Philip and Gail Ross, BFATL's founders and directors. It is located across from Ben Carson Middle School on Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy (formerly Bankhead Hwy).

WHEN DO WE ACCEPT NEW TEACHERS?

Because we begin the first week of Georgia Tech classes, we recruit all of our teachers before each semester begins. We generally do not accept new teachers once the semester has begun. If you are interested, contact Michelle Stille at michelle.stille[at]gatech.edu to receive an application.
