Profile
I am a fifth year undergrad at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the most recent addition to a
family legacy of Georgia Tech students. I am majoring in Computer Science and I am planning on
graduating in Spring 2010. My family legacy at Georgia Tech started with my grandfather and has
continued down the past couple of generations, the most recent being my brother. So it only seemed
natural that I would follow in their footsteps, given my love of games and technology. It is my hope that
my professional life will be as fruitful as theirs. (My dad is about to retire and my brother is very
successful as a SAP consultant)
Though brief, my career path has led me through a variety of experiences that have helped me find my interests. My first important job was in Maryland at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center with the Students in Engineering and Science Internship (SESI) program. As an intern in the heliophysics (solar physics) department, I helped to update the project websites for the department. This project helped me understand the inner workings of website design in a professional and government setting. I learned about extensible markup language (XML), cascading style sheet (CSS), and most importantly server-side include (SSI). Even though this was a wonderful internship, I felt that the distance from my family wasn't right for me.
Despite the lack of available jobs due to the recent downturn of the economy, I was hired at Fry's Electronics as a sales associate. My main duty was to help customers find the correct software for their needs within their budget. This service was an eye-opening experience because it allowed me to understand the demands of my future customer base as a software designer.
Following my job at Fry's, I became an intern at The Home Depot in their IT department. My projects for that summer varied from designing user interface (UI) mock-ups to updating current system functions. For this internship, I had to learn REST services and Adobe Flex. Due to the fact that this was my first encounter with this new style of programming, this internship was very informative.
Outside of these jobs and internships, I have spent my time helping others. I have been a Girl Scout for 11 years, from which I earned the Silver Award. I have also participated in multiple Habitat for Humanity house builds since 2001. During my downtime I love to play new video games, watch football, ride motorcycles, and continue learning about car engines with my father.
Overall, I hope that after I graduate I will find my niche in the professional environment. Until then, I will continue exploring viable options in the technology field.
