In 1755, he and Lydia signed a deed selling a hundred acres of land situated on the north side of the Dan River for 100 Pounds "Virginia Currency." Said to be the first white man to take his family over the mountains into what is now Tennessee to live (1769).
Settled on the Watauga River. Formed an agreement, the "Watauga Association," with thirteen commissioners, including William Bean, George Russell and Jacob Womack (Martha Bean's father)
At the battle of Kings Mountain, Capt. Bean and his man, including brother or son John, scattered a band of Tories and hanged 9 of them.
Built Beans Station (US 25E and US 11) in 1811, built in antebellum stile with walls of homemade brick 15 in. thick.
