Matt Hagy is currently pursuing a PhD in physical chemistry at Georgia Tech. He is a member of the Hernandez Group where he investigates the behavior of far-from-equilibrium macromolecular systems using computer simulation and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Hagy performed his undergraduate education at Case Western Reserve University where he received a B.S. in polymer science and engineering. Outside of the lab he is an avid cyclist and an amateur triathlete and is further a fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Great Lakes Beer.
In addition to research, Hagy has also led an initiative to create online chemistry educational resources with the goal of providing free interactive tutorials and tools to students and instructors at all levels. The first site, sig-figs.com, provides extensive resources aimed at teaching the system of significant figures, which is the arithmetic of chemistry. Debuting in July 2010, the site has already served over 200,000 students and instructors at both the high school and university levels, and its sophisticated arithmetic tools have been used over 1,200,000 times.
