Two men from opposite ends of the universe have one summer to overcome their tragic pasts. A Saint from heaven named Jack, who carries 40 years of pain in his heart, is assigned to help a man named Sam Murdock, who is convinced his life is over after a broken heart. In a world far away, Jack shows Sam there is life after heartbreak, using every example of romance, beauty and passion the world has to offer, while he quietly begins to ponder his past and the feelings for the woman he left behind. Jack's lessons come in handy as a mystery woman comes into Sam's life, however, the woman is not who they think she is. She may hold the key to Sam's present, but does she also hold the key to unlock Jack's past? An Invincible Summer is a novel examining all aspects of love, and what happens to all of us once we encounter, sustain, or lose it.
Excerpts from An Invincible Summer
The memory of a mistake, involving the only woman he ever loved, was a cut that bled deeply within him. As time passed, however, the bleeding would stop, and the wound would become a scar. It was like all scars, no longer physically painful, but with one, far off stare at the ugly remains of something once beautiful, it began to hurt him in other ways far more sinister. Physical pain passes eventually, but pains of the heart and soul are carried forever. It was time to go, and as much as he wanted to stay, he knew he couldn't. He pulled his gray fedora down to his eyes, then pulled the collar of his long gray overcoat up, and walked away.
Jack looked around the restaurant evasively, not really sure whether to answer. Finally he looked back at Sam and spoke. "Well, I'm not supposed to say anything, then again the Lord hears everything you say anyway. I can't tell you the whole reason, but let's just say you're here because we wanted you to find something. I've been assigned to be your escort for reasons I cannot disclose. Sam, we are going to have a good time so don't worry about anything. You are in good hands with me."
"What are you, Saint Allstate?"
"Cute, Sam, real cute. By the way, did you know I have been named escort of the month two months in a row?" he said proudly.
Sam smiled. "Really? I'll bet you are enjoying the free set of steak knives."
His statement gripped her, because she didn't know what the future held for them. Lara said, "I want you to know the last few months have been very special for me. No matter where we go after tonight, I wanted you to know that."
"I'm flattered you would say such a thing," Sam said, his cheeks beginning to show signs of blush in them. "But as I said before, we have all the time in the world now."
Lara was glad he couldn't see her face, as it was mired in confusion and worry. A small tear began to leak out of her eye as she said, "Yeah, Sam, we have all the time in the world."
