The Saint

release year: 1997
genre: action/adventure
viewing setting: theater, 4/5/97 and home DVD, 8/7/01
what I expected: wasn't sure, figured it for some sort of spy movie
what I got: an entertaining variant of James Bond

synopsis: The Saint, master spy and disguise artist, becomes involved in a plot to return Russia to its Cold War attitude.

impressions: I found it action-packed and downright neat. The romance bits slowed the action down at times, but they also contributed to the overall plot. Humor was also abundant, mostly when the Saint outfoxed someone. The really impressive part of this is Val Kilmer's adoption of different identities and the way the character uses his brain - not weapons - to get out of tough spots. This is a well-thought-out, well-done action/drama.

acting: Val Kilmer outdoes himself here, as usual. He plays a variety of disguised characters, and plays them well. Elisabeth Shue, whom I don't care for in any way, played the quirky scientist. The actor who portrayed the Russian millionaire turned in a good, stern performance.

final word: As much fun as a good James Bond movie, without the cliches. Due to the action, humor, and multiple identities of the Saint, this one should stand up to repeated viewing.
